KB Café in Montmartre

I’ve been on a quest for delicious, quality coffee lately, apparently. It’s a good thing I found KB Café in Montmartre (or more accurately, South Pigalle).

I found myself wandering around… well, I’d be lying if I said it was my own neighborhood. Let’s say it’s the neighborhood around my neighborhood. South Pigalle – or SoPi if you’re bobo – is abuzz with adorable shops, artisan bakeries, and unique bars. Now, you can add some very good coffee to the list.

KB Café (formerly Kooka Boora) was opened in 2010 by Nicolas Piégay after a visit to Australia apparently left him in awe of the coffee. The non-descript exterior of this corner Montmartre location gives way to a large-windowed, comfortable and minimal interior.

The baristas are friendly and skilled – I’ve not had a single flawed cappuccino. Last time I was there I ordered the chai latte and that didn’t disappoint either. The chai had a lovely warm bite to the end of it, almost peppery… it is definitely worth your attention.

I love the music in the café, too. I’m not sure if it’s the staff who chooses or the owner, but it’s eclectic and perfect for the atmosphere. I’ve heard everything from vintage jazz to classic rock to lyric-less ambient tracks to new Florence and the Machine.

Next time I go to KB Café, I plan on staying for lunch… or at least dessert! All the food is made in-house and prices are reasonable. And they look delicious. The cheesecake and carrot cake are calling to me, I’m telling you.

The café is a bit small but there always seems to be seats available in the large communal table. Given the buzz surrounding the place and its proximity to the touristy Montmartre, my guess is that seats are a lot scarcer during travel high season. At the same time, when the weather warms up, there are quite a few terrace seats I’ll have my eye on!
